Needing to change my training

As some of you may remember, I started training combatives approximately 10 months ago. Its been a blast learning a "street" tested system. The instructor is great at presenting the material in such a way that it makes it easy to pick up as well as easy to see why and when it would work in a real life situation. However, balancing training and weight lifting has presented a problem. The tendonitis is back. Both my arms are hurting 75% of the time. At age 30, I'm able to knock it out pretty quickly, but I can't continue this vicious cycle.

The final straw for me was the pain I felt while bass fishing this weekend. Fishing is my number one hobby. Every cast hurt. So heres my tentative plan right now.

I'm going to stop going on a regular bases. I will continue to go to the workshops as well as private lessons every couple months or so. I'm thinking about purchasing the Body Opponent bag with the built in groin. I know its not ideal, but I could practice my headbutts, knees, elbows, eye gouges, groin shots etc. I figure continue use on the BOB would keep my "tools" firing off with accuracey and quickness.

Any thoughts to my situation?

I've had similar problems with my elbows. Too many pullups/pushups, too much punching, hell, even throwing a football can cause my elbows to flare up, sometimes so bad that I can't even move my arms. Once when I was in Basic Training and we were doing rope climbing drills I climbed to the top of the rope only to find that the lower part of my arms, from my elbows down had stopped responding. I slid all the way back down while my Drill Sergeant stood there giving me a WTF look. All I could do was say I didn't know what happened. My elbows were all swollen up and I couldn't even stand at Parade Rest.

It's come and gone over the years. The only thing I know to do is just to ease into repetitive movements, being careful not to put too much stress on the joint or over extend it. I don't think there's a cure for it. It's just another one of the pains I've learned I have to deal with. But I seem to have lots of those. If you find that certain activities are more likely to cause it, try to train while leaving those activities out of your regimen. Try to find substitutes that will still allow you to train without hurting yourself.

Go to a chiropractor and have your elbows sorted out. I had something similar. It turned out that an old injury which I had ignored caused a compensation in my body which eventually lead to other bits of my arm compensating until the chain reached the end and my elbow began to hurt - a lot. He could even show my which techniques I did were causing the issue and suggested alternatives.
Training priority for combat sport is SKILL, CONDITIONING, STRENGTH.

Steve's very right. The book "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue does a lot of this sorting out down the chain too.

I have that book and it is absolutely awesome!

You need to pick your priority. It looks like you've picked lifting.

I would do it the other way around though. I would prioritize the combatives training. There is nothing to compare with hands-on, in-person training from a good instructor. Take your weight training down to the minimum, then build it back up again slowly. Your body just needs time to get used to the extra work load, but it will adapt if given enough time to slowly adapt.

How attached are you to your current strength routine? Have you adapted it at all to your combatives needs?

Have you ever tried the supplement Cissus?

It got rid of my tendonitis.
